The club was formed in 1976 as the Post Office Research Sub Aqua Club (PORSAC). The club was later renamed as the BT Research Sub Aqua club (BTRSAC) following the split of the Post Office into two separate businesses. The club was originally affiliated to the Sub Aqua Association (SAA) but decided to switch to the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) in 1994. By 2000 the club offered completely open membership. To recognise this fact it was renamed Sunstar Sub Aqua. In 2006 it was one of the first Sub Aqua clubs to achieve a Clubmark accreditation. In 2009 the club received recognition for 15 years of BSAC membership.
