Dive report Alan

Thirteen keen club members travelled down to Cornwall for a club diving holiday. We stayed at Sea Acres caravan site (very convenient) and dived out of Mullion and Porthkerris, both on the Lizard peninsular. Air fills were from the dive centre at Porthkerris. The weather was very kind: we had sun every day and calm conditions to launch the boats. Ian Brown organised the trip (supported by Joe), Steve Barnes and Simon Alexander kindly travelled as dedicated coxswains (which made the diving much easier to organises) – thanks guys and both Joe and Ian B towed the boats (thanks guys).

We dived all 6 days of the holiday and did about 114 dives in total on both reef and wreck. We dived some sites that we’d never dived before off Mullion and some old favourites like the Volnay wreck, the Mohegan wreck (on the Manacles) and the Rock Island Bridge wreck in the Helford river. Underwater visibility was generally very good in the range 5-10m. We saw lots of wildlife: Risso’s dolphins, crawfish, octopus, lobsters, swimming scallops (very cute), conger eel (in holes and free swimming), cuttle fish, john dory, some very friendly and beautiful cuckoo wrasse, big shoals of pouting, etc.

Conor, a new club member, was on his first UK sea dives and did brilliantly, and for several other club members this was their first time diving off the Lizard. One club member lost their dive computer but Shaun, diligent as ever, spent a couple of hours walking the beach and searching the surf-line and found the computer in the surf (great job Shaun).

We all had a great time: good, safe diving, nice sea food dinners, a few beers/glasses on wine and some great company. This part of Cornwall is great for a club trip and, if you haven’t dived here before, we can thoroughly recommend it to both novice divers and experienced divers alike.

Dive report Conor

Regarding my recent dive trip to cornwall with the iDive club, I couldn’t fault the club one bit. I joined as a beginner with the club and now feel a lot more confident as a diver. I felt very relaxed, comfortable and safe, and every member was willing to help out or give advice, so the trip was well organised along with social activities, and the dive leaders were very professional and safe.

I’ve only been on a few dives in the UK, but the other members have been very friendly, helpful, and patient while I learn the ropes.
Diving from the RIBs has been much harder work to get everyone kitted up and in the water than any of the diving I’ve done previously.
Finishing a day’s diving normally leaves me tired, but muscles I didn’t even know I had, were sore after a week of hauling heavy kit on and off the boats.
That being said – the effort of everyone involved, especially our Coxwains and trip/dive organisers, has made it all work and resulted in some fantastic
dives on sites I likely never would have been interested in doing if it weren’t for this trip.

Many thanks for bringing me, and I can’t wait for the next one!

with appreciation, Conor
